Tau is one type of microtubule-binding protein that is primarily expressed within the neurons of the central nervous system and is involved in the modulation of microtubule stability. In Alzheimer's disease, the formation of neurofibrillary tangles with accumulated phosphorylated Tau proteins is known to occur.
